FSU ORGANIZING BOOTCAMP

Our goal to empower students and ensure they have the tools they need to become leaders on their campus and in their professional lives continues in Florida’s Capital City

[Orlando, FL - February 13th, 2023] Today, Rep. Anna V. Eskamani announced that on March 11th, People Power For Florida will host its second organizing bootcamp -– a training for local college and high school students where they will learn best practices for political organizing, community outreach, digital strategy, and go in-depth about the upcoming 2023 Legislative Session.

At their February 4th organizing bootcamp, People Power for Florida successfully trained 65 students on best practices in political advocacy and engagement. From local high schools to several universities like UCF, Rollins College, Florida Southern College, Embry Riddle, Seminole State College, and Valencia College–students from across Central Florida proved they were ready to take action and rally against attacks on higher education.

“Our first organizing bootcamp in Central Florida was an incredible success,” added Representative Eskamani. “As legislative session kicks off this March, we’re excited to bring together Tallahassee based students for a day of community building, skills training, and leadership development.”

People Power for Florida has hosted voter registration events at FSU, FAMU, UF, UCF, USF, FIU, FAU, FGCU, Florida Southern, Eastern Florida State College, Polk State College, Broward College, and Hillsborough Community College campuses since launching in 2021 to reach the group of Floridians aged 18 to 25 that have historically been least likely to vote in elections. Another focus of People Power for Florida has been to build lasting power and create an infrastructure of organizers statewide that can engage and register voters in unique ways and ensure that groups that have traditionally been left behind by political parties get civically involved.

During the organizing bootcamp, People Power for Florida will feature guest speakers that will not only share parts of their own experiences of being civic leaders, but they’ll give advice and insight to students on how to get more engaged at a local level and evoke political change. Confirmed speakers right now include Representative Michele Rayner and communications guru Natasha Sutherland.

In 2022, People Power for Florida collected 5,013 voter registration forms and 8,941 forms since its inception in 2021. In 2023, People Power Florida plans to continue registering voters and expanding its mission to include voter education as well.
