PEOPLE POWER FOR FLORIDA ANNOUNCES ORGANIZING BOOTCAMPS AT USF AND UNF

The back-to-back trainings at two Florida universities aim to engage students and empower them to organize for change within their communities

[Tallahassee, FL - January XX, 2024] Today, Rep. Anna V. Eskamani announced that People Power For Florida (PPFF) will host its first two Organizing Bootcamps of 2024 – training workshops that teach students how to build power and engage their communities.

The first bootcamp will be held at the University of South Florida on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 10am to 4pm It will be followed one week later by a bootcamp at the University of North Florida on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10am to 4 pm.

The twin events will mark the sixth and seventh organizing bootcamps that People Power for Florida has hosted since the start of 2023. PPFF is engaging and organizing young people all across the state: The organization has previously hosted successful training sessions at UCF, FSU, UF, FIU and, most recently, FAMU – the first organizing bootcamp at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in PPFF history.

The PPFF team will cover topics ranging from how to organize on a college campus to how to engage with the 2024 Florida state legislative session, which runs from Jan. 9 to March 8. Students will also have the opportunity to hear directly from local elected officials, longtime organizers and community leaders.

“We are so excited to kick off 2024 with back-to-back organizing bootcamps. These will be particularly timely, as they will take place simultaneously with the 2024 Legislative Session – and just a few short months before the next presidential election,” said Representative Anna V. Eskamani. “We are inspired by the next generation of young leaders and are honored to help prepare them for a future of civic engagement and political power. Together we can build collective efficacy that creates meaningful change.”

“Students we have met across the state have made it clear that their is a hunger to learn more about organizing and how to use their collective power; and we are grateful for the opportunity to engage with Tampa and Jacksonville students to ensure they have the tools they need to advocate for themselves and their peers in the face of Florida’s continued attacks on students and higher education,” said Communications Director Allison Minnerly.

Anyone interested in learning more about the bootcamps can register online here for USF and here for UNF.

In 2022, People Power for Florida collected 5,013 voter registration forms and nearly 9,000 forms since its inception in 2021. In 2023, People Power Florida plans to continue registering voters and expanding its mission to become a leading source for Florida-specific voter education.
